What is the
Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)?
Simply defined, the Information Technology Infrastructure
Library (ITIL) is the "key to managing IT services," and
is intended as a framework for assisting organizations with the
deployment of IT Service Management (ITSM).
ITIL is
the most widely
accepted approach to ITSM in the world. The ITIL framework
provides a cohesive set of internationally recognized best
practices compiled from both international public and private
sectors from the past two decades.
ITIL consists of a
series of books that provide guidance and detailed
approaches for planning, implementing and managing high quality IT
services. ITIL also outlines an extensive set of management
guidelines intended to help with the maturity and continuous
improvement of these services, organized into a comprehensive
implementation lifecycle.
ITIL Version 3: The Implementation Lifecycle
The extent to which IT organizations can
achieve measurable improvements from ITIL depends on how well they
accept change and a different way of delivering services to the
business. Managing these changes is not particularly easy,
considering the complexity associated with many larger institutions
carrying an inordinate amount of physical hardware, applications and
support functions. As a result, it is more important than ever to
leverage those tools that provide the most tactical support for
promoting ITIL awareness within an organization, as well as
providing longer term, strategic value to core IT processes and
services.
